What are dental implants?

Smile and live fully!

Dental implants are a modern and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They are tooth roots made from biocompatible materials, typically titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone.

Once the implant integrates with the bone, it provides a sturdy foundation for a replacement tooth (a crown, bridge, or denture).

Abutment

A connector placed on top of the implant post to hold and support the crown.

Implant

A titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as a root for the new tooth.

What is the dental implants process?

1. Evaluation & planning

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. We will assess your oral health, take detailed X-rays, and discuss your goals and expectations. This step ensures that dental implants are the right solution for you.

2. Implant placement

The next step is the surgical placement of the implant post into your jawbone. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort. Over the next few months, the implant will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, providing a solid foundation for the new tooth.

3. Abutment attachment

Once the implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone, the abutment is attached to the implant post. This connector will hold the crown securely in place.

4. Crown/bridge attachment

Impressions – after the gums have healed around the abutment, we are taking impressions of your mouth. These impressions are used to create a custom-made crown/bridge,

Crown/bridge fabrication – the crown or the bridge, designed to match your natural teeth in colour, shape, and size, is fabricated in a dental lab.

Final placement – once the crown is ready, it is securely attached to the abutment. We will ensure that the fit, bite, and appearance are flawless, providing a natural and functional replacement for the missing tooth.

Common questions our patients ask

How many teeth can you have on implants?

Dental implants can support a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even a full arch of teeth. For multiple teeth, a few strategically placed implants can support a bridge or a full set of dentures. This makes dental implants a versatile solution for varying degrees of tooth loss.

Are dental implants painful?

The implant procedure itself is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the surgery. After the procedure, some discomfort and swelling are normal, but these symptoms can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and should subside within a few days. Most patients report that the discomfort is comparable to that of a tooth extraction.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. This includes regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing, and avoiding habits that can damage teeth, such as smoking.

How long do you go without teeth when getting implants?

The timeline for getting dental implants can vary. After the initial implant placement, it typically takes about 3 to 6 months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone (osseointegration). During this healing period, you may be provided with a temporary denture or bridge to wear. Once the implant is secure, the permanent crown or bridge is placed.

What is the best age for dental implants?

There is no specific "best" age for dental implants; they can be placed in adults of all ages. However, it is essential that the jawbone has fully developed, which generally means waiting until at least the late teens or early twenties. Older adults, even those in their 70s or 80s, can successfully receive dental implants, provided they have sufficient bone density and good overall health.
