What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the tooth’s pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels). This treatment can save a severely damaged or infected tooth, preventing the need for extraction.

Signs you might need root canal treatment

  • Severe Toothache: Persistent pain that doesn’t go away, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Sensitivity: Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
  • Discolouration: Darkening or discolouration of the tooth.
  • Swelling and Tenderness: Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
  • Abscess: Presence of a pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth.

Our process

  1. Consultation and examination: During your initial visit, we will perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess the extent of the damage or infection.
  2. Local anaesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we will administer local anaesthesia to numb the affected area.
  3. Removing the infected pulp: A small opening is made in the tooth to access and remove the infected or damaged pulp.
  4. Cleaning and shaping: The root canals are meticulously cleaned and shaped to remove all bacteria and debris.
  5. Filling the canals: The cleaned canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent future infections.
  6. Restoration: After the root canal treatment, the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown to protect and strengthen it.

Aftercare for root canal treatment

  • Good oral hygiene: Continue to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Avoid hard foods: For a few days after the procedure, avoid chewing on hard or sticky foods to protect the treated tooth.
  • Follow-up visits: Attend any follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure the tooth is properly restored.
  • Report any issues: Contact your dentist if you experience persistent pain or signs of infection after the treatment.
