What is a root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the tooth’s pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels). This treatment can save a severely damaged or infected tooth, preventing the need for extraction.
Signs you might need root canal treatment
- Severe Toothache: Persistent pain that doesn’t go away, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
- Sensitivity: Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
- Discolouration: Darkening or discolouration of the tooth.
- Swelling and Tenderness: Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
- Abscess: Presence of a pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth.
Our process
- Consultation and examination: During your initial visit, we will perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess the extent of the damage or infection.
- Local anaesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we will administer local anaesthesia to numb the affected area.
- Removing the infected pulp: A small opening is made in the tooth to access and remove the infected or damaged pulp.
- Cleaning and shaping: The root canals are meticulously cleaned and shaped to remove all bacteria and debris.
- Filling the canals: The cleaned canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent future infections.
- Restoration: After the root canal treatment, the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown to protect and strengthen it.
Aftercare for root canal treatment
- Good oral hygiene: Continue to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
- Avoid hard foods: For a few days after the procedure, avoid chewing on hard or sticky foods to protect the treated tooth.
- Follow-up visits: Attend any follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure the tooth is properly restored.
- Report any issues: Contact your dentist if you experience persistent pain or signs of infection after the treatment.

Dr. Nikhil Patel has been fantastic, after experiencing a cracked tooth he managed a very clean repair. The whole team takes pride in their work making the whole experience rather pleasant. Most of the Dental nurses spend some time on reception so have an in-depth understanding of your needs before even seeing a dentist. Every member of staff from the reception to the ‘chair ‘ are always polite , efficient and professional in every way.From both the dentist and hygienist I always have good advice about my teeth .Front reception staff always have time to talk and discuss appointments .Everyone always seems to have time for me the client. All of the staff are so lovely and caring and I have never had a negative appointment with them. They look after their clients so well and always explain what the treatment plan is and what to expect. I would not want to be with any other practise.
